Butternut Squash Fries - Recipe Pinned and Made

Ready to eat.

Got my husband on Pinterest. He says that if we are pinning recipes we ought to be making them. Agreed! I saw one this morning for Butternut Squash Fries. As it turns out, he'd peeled and refrigerated a squash early this morning. He made the fries for lunch.

The verdict: Good with rice and beans! They are squishy, but the edges caramelize and that makes them super tasty. Ours stuck to the cooling rack while cooking and the extra clean up would likely deter me from making them again.

Kitchen Update - the Walls

We've painted our cabinets. We've painted the walls. Flooring is on order. It is starting to come together.

We've lived in our house for 7 and 1/2 years. During that time I've detested the color on our kitchen walls but hesitated to paint because I couldn't decide where to use color in the room. It's a large room that was originally, I'm told, a gun shop.When the house changed hands in the late 80's/early 90's the original, smaller kitchen in an adjacent room was ripped out and the former shop converted to this kitchen. I'm told the original kitchen was "gross" but I would like to have seen it. I'm a big fan of compact kitchens with everything in easy reach.

BEFORE

This section is not so bad. The cabinets are two-tone sage and cream. I think there might have been a third similar color on the cabinets but it's not clear from the photos and I've already forgotten exactly what they looked like. The wall behind the stove is sage.

The rest of the kitchen (and entryway) was painted in an orange, pink and white swirl pattern. I'm not sure how well you can see it, but it was awful. Aside from not liking the color choice, the pattern was distracting and created texture which trapped dust. The layout of the room (four entrances, two windows, and cabinets that don't reach the ceiling) presented a challenge when choosing color because the room felt disjointed and I did not want to accentuate that. The solid color on the walls and cabinets unifies and refreshes the room in a way I could not have imagined.

AFTER

Walls are "Golden Honey" from Benjamin Moore. It looks like butter. It's almost a neutral but still cheerful and bright. Garth talked me down from a gold in the same tone as the deep blue cabinets. Upper cabinets are "Ibis White" from Sherwin-Williams and the lower cabinets are "Symphony Blue" from BM. Hoping I'll eventually stumble across some cabinet pulls like the ones below and will change out the white.

Recently, I won this fab dress in a giveaway by Regina at Seven Blooms.

The dress is silky soft and can be worn simply or accessorized, making it fitting for both casual or more dressy affairs. But, the BEST part is the pure joy that comes from twirling in it! It is true to the description including her recommendation to order the smaller size if you are between sizes, which I am and did.

Kitchen Glimpse and New Kitsch!

This week we started painting our kitchen cabinets. If you can, ignore the white drawer pulls. They are going as soon as I find a suitable, reasonably priced replacement. It looked better when the painter's tape was still covering them.

It took 3 coats of Benjamin Moore Symphony Blue. There are still a few white streaks but only on close inspection. For reference, the lower kitchen cabinets (11 drawers and 7 cabinets) plus this cabinet took approximately a half gallon of paint.

This week we picked up this lovely antique baker's table at Loot in Turners Falls, MA, and hope to raise it up (suggestions welcome!) to make it an island. We have a butcher block top from Freecycle that is the same width but longer to give extra prep area. What got me on this table is the flour bin. I'd been searching online for plastic flour bins hoping we could figure out some way to incorporate a couple into an island. All the ones that I found were much too big for home use even with us buying flour in bulk. That this one crossed our path is amazing. My husband, like his Dad, is a baker although as a hobby not a profession, and bakes our bread.

We also acquired this bit of awesomeness. It is, without exaggeration, the best stereo system we've owned! We may keep it for a while, but will likely attempt to find it a forever home at some point.

New Photo Backdrop - Plexiglass

Got two (Three actually but the awesome if somewhat useless orange one is not part of this story.) white plexiglass pieces to use for my photo backdrop. They look like milk glass and cast a lovely light around objects.

My clever husband picked these out. They were display pieces from our local department store.

Sew Fun

A friend asked me to make her some place mats and this project has been pending all summer. I'm so pleased to have finally finished piecing together the decorative portion and now just have to add the backing fabric. It represents a sort of "catching up" that I have been working toward and has my fired up for future projects.

I find color and texture inspiring. I've always had a desire to create but not an outlet until the past few years. One of the things I enjoy about sewing is that more often than not the fabrics suggest the project so I am not frozen by endless possibilities.

In this case, we went in search of the fabric. My husband picked it out. The bold patterns made it challenging to piece together, but that part of the project is always challenging, and the most fun. I think they will look smashing in my friend's dining room!

There are 8 total. They ought to bring some brightness and cheer through a dreary winter. Here are the other four:

I came up with this style after being inspired by fabric combinations that I saw in a catalog. This is my fourth set using this design, although always with different fabrics.

Project: Kitchen Face Lift. Phase I

This wonderful old cabinet was built by the first owners of my grandparents home, sometime around the late 1930's to the 1940's. I'd guess. It is now part of its fourth household.

Upper Cabinet. Top and sides are raw wood. Shelves have staining around where objects were placed. Not all doors are the same type of wood. Lots of nicks and staining.

It lived in a room that in my grandparents time was a laundry room, sewing room, and workshop. I can still remember the scent of it. Earthy. After my grandmother passed away, my parents took the cabinet and used it in their garage for storage.

Since we bought our house seven years ago I've been trying to cajole my Dad into giving it to me. We have a great wall for it in our kitchen, or would have after we removed a cabinet, which my husband did a month or so ago. My Dad had been fighting cancer for a few years and this summer was the end stage. When he recognized this he went on a spree of tying up loose ends, one of which was getting me this cabinet. On one of my last few visits he suggested I clean it out giving my Mom and sister what they wanted before taking the rest to sell, donate or give to friends. It was full of my grandmother's odds and ends, at least the ones that I hadn't already made of with. ; )

My Dad and I went to U-haul to get boxes and packing material. Then my husband and I wrapped and packed everything. I assumed we'd come get it all someday but my Dad was on a mission and hired me a truck. The next day my husband and I were headed home with this huge cabinet and all its belongings.

I was hoping to show before and after pics of the cabinet - a big reveal - but we'll probably store it in our dining room (I'm considering renaming this the "nature abhors a vacuum" room.), doors off, until we are ready to move it into our kitchen. That wont be for a while. More on that later.

The paints did not seem to have the same sheen so I got higher gloss in the S-W than the BM. I hope that doesn't turn out to be a gigantic mistake but so far it looks like the right call.

I wonder a bit what Mr. Schultz and my Dad and even my grandmother would think of this. They all used items until they wore out. My Dad wore his clothing to shreds despite having fresh items in the closet if he wanted them. On that level, I think they would be pleased at the continued use of this piece.

We came across this piece in an old cabinet in my parents' garage. It seems to be a purely decorative ewer. The top is sealed shut and it appears to have been made that way. We thought that it must have a had a purpose other than decor, but can't think of any. Thoughts?

Strawberries!

Today is the start of strawberry season at Upinngil.I'm so excited to have fresh fruit again.

I freeze the berries and use them mostly in fruit smoothies. Some will end up in fruit crisp, and, if I get around to it, strawberry shortcake! Oooh, and maybe ice cream! Because most are used in smoothies, I don't hull them (remove stem and leaves) which makes processing them a little easier. If I need to hull them for a crisp I just partially defrost the amount I need and do it then.

I took some pics of my processing process. Maybe next time, I'll remember to take the camera and get some photos of the farm!

This is just under 1/2 of the 33 lbs of berries picked today.

I gently dry them before freezing on trays.

I try to freeze in a single layer but was running out of space so I added a few more on top. They have to be put into freezer bags as individual frozen strawberries or they are difficult to separate.

If I go again and get another 15 pounds or so, I'll make strawberry jam!

Reuse Idea #5 - Cloth Napkins

Made these napkins yesterday using vintage fabrics (though any soft cotton would do) on the front and a 32" x 32" white vintage table cloth on the back. The table cloth was initially purchased for my shop, but I noticed a small hole so I decided to repair it and use the cloth as fabric instead. The size was ideal, and the repaired hole is under the top stitching and isn't noticeable.

The tablecloth also had a cool detail that I couldn't resist: in one corner it had the letter "L", the first letter of the last name of the person I made them for. I hope she likes them. And, if she is reading this, I had to make a fabric substitution. I'll explain when I see you!

Garden Photos

Walking around to the side of the house, I'm greeted by orange and red goodness! It almost made me cry today. Our yard is starting to become something I enjoy working in and looking at. Next on along the path is a little section being gleefully taken over by grape hyacinth.

Transplanted a bunch of hens and chicks to a small rock wall in our front yard. Got bitten by ants.

Love the pop of pink amidst all those green Hostas ready to open. The photo doesn't do it justice. And, I need to move the hostas away from the cherry tree - that was on last year's "to do" list!

Busy bee found something in bloom!

The most exciting part, lots and lots of earth worms in my front yard! When we bought our house the front yard was dead and brown. The former owners, I believe, used chemicals to kill the flowers of the owner before them. My next door neighbors get a kick out of watching each successive owner undo the yard work of the prior one. After composting and replanting on our part, I'm thrilled to see that soil is becoming healthy again! I'm also so pleased to see the beginning of our yard becoming the lush garden I hope it will be.

Reuse Idea #5 - Mugs

This is both my most and least favorite type of reuse.

Using damaged (and formerly favorite!) mugs as stuff holders is a great way to bring a bit of color or beauty to a work area. Sadly, if I'm using a mug in this way, it also means I've broken or worn out a favorite piece.

I'll occasionally purchase a second or vintage mug for this purpose. Here are some beautiful seconds found on Etsy that would make terrific containers.

It had a flaw so she drilled a hole in the bottom making useful as a planter as well as a pen holder or other container.

Tell Tale Leaves

Looking closely at our hyacinths today, wondering where the pink ones were, I noticed that the tips of the leaves are the same color as the flower. Then I noticed this on the daffodils and tulips, too! How great is that?! Look carefully at the tips of the greenery in the photos and you'll see what I mean. And, ignore the garden debris, we do.

I'm hoping to start a new feature on my blog called: "What Do They Keep?" My favorite artisans and shops create or collect such beautiful items and it often makes me curious about what they choose to make or keep for themselves.

I hope feature a new shop weekly. To start it off, I'll share a few items that were initially intended for sale in one of my shops, but ended up in use at home instead:

A cup cozy that I made for Vivid Texture.

It was my first needle felting project and turned out to be so cheerful and fun that I decided to keep it.

When not in use, it sits happily on my desk.

Most items that I collect for my vintage shop and choose to keep are pieces that are sitting on my inventory shelf awaiting their turn in the shop and turn out to meet a storage or organizational need. Boring, but true.

Less often, I will keep something like this McCoy pitcher that I just adore.

I've been thinking about tightening up my shop a bit. Removing some items. Taking new photos. A spring cleaning of sorts. This little tape dispenser was on the chopping block. It's very pretty and the porcelain and decoration are in excellent shape, but it doesn't dispense tape. Sigh. And then I thought, What a sweet paperweight!

(I also lowered the price.)

Reuse Idea #3 - Kitchenware for Your Plants

Why toss out your pretty, less-than-perfect plates and other kitchenware when they could be repurposed as charming containers for your plants?!

Vintage plates make pretty, inexpensive bases for your flower pots and the choice of patterns and colors is seemingly endless. Teapots, bowls and other containers that no longer serve their original purpose can be used as planters.

You don't want to use good or expensive pieces because they will get ruined by the dirt and water. So, recycling is a perfect solution for planters. Odds and ends can often be found for free or nearly free if you keep an eye out. A few good places to look:

Second Hand Shops. Inexpensive to begin with, some may have free boxes.
Church Rummge Sales.
Yard Sales.
Your neighbors! If you can swallow your pride long enough to rummage through a free box on the sidewalk, you may find treasure.

Vintage porcelain plate.

I initially picked up this plate for the plate hanger that was still around it.

I think it and the melamine one below were bought at a $1/bag church sale.

Melamine or melmac plates are GREAT as planter bases. They come in a variety of colors and patterns and are sturdier than porcelain.

Vintage teapot.

This I found walking around Jamaica Plain, MA. It was in a box of free stuff along with an earthenware planter.

This bowl and plate were well-loved kitchen pieces that held meaning for us but were no longer usable for their original purpose. But, here, they hold a beautiful jade plant - you'll just have to trust me on that.

I've started a new sewing project for my Vivid Texture shop and have been struggling with how to keep things at hand without creating so much clutter that I cannot work. Aha! I have this copper kitchen dispenser that was waiting to be listed in my vintage shop, and it seems like it will be a great solution for sorting labels, trim, etc.

My honey on the radio talking about honey! Specifically, about Green River Ambrosia Meadery purveyors of artisan quality mead, made right here in the Pioneer Valley.

If you have tried mead in the past and found it unpleasant or too thick, or are simply curious about trying it, now is the time. Meaderies are growing in popularity and the products are often excellent. It is officially classified as a wine but is not wine or beer, or even something in between. It is simply fermented honey. The result is most like a wine but taste and mouth feel are quite different.

If you are in Massachusetts, Green River Ambrosia is often sampling mead around the state. Most recently, they also started selling mead at area farmers' markets! Follow them on Facebook to learn about upcoming tastings!

Fair Trade Chocolate Ponders

Today, I came across a "Chocolate Scorecard" from an article on fair trade practices by Green America. Something to consider when buying this sweet treat.

Sjaak's is my favorite for a special treat of vegan truffles. (They have both vegan and non-vegan chocolates.) Otherwise, I order 80% Panama Extra Dark chocolate bars from Equal Exchange, by the case. I prefer the taste of dark chocolate, but also like it for its intensity, because it keeps me from having more than a little at a time. It's more expensive, but I eat less and am support farming practices that I believe in. So, I think it evens out in the end.

A Little More Outside Time, Please.

Indeed. I've been pondering this lately when my brain isn't too distracted by all there is to see and do on the Internet. I wish to be more active and interactive in person, but too often find myself flipping between Etsy, Facebook and Twitter to see what's new. I have two Etsy shops so much of that time is spent creating item listings and responding to customer inquiries, but I'm fooling myself if I think most of it is.

Connections made through the Internet can be affirming and amazing but I struggle with boundaries. It is where I work, how I unwind, a place to check-in with friends and have a laugh, and, because of that, can suck me in for hours. The Internet is not a bad thing, but it is a virtual thing. I am happier, feel healthier and sleep better when the majority of my time has been spent offline.

So I wonder, what are you favorite "real time" things to do and how do you make time for them? My very favorite is skiing in the woods with my hubby on a sunny winter day. Every moment is amazing: the crisp air, the sunlight on the snowy trees, feeling my muscles work as I glide through the snow. For me, it is perfection. I've done that once this winter.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts and suggestions. The full article mentioned above is worth a read, even though I totally disagree with cooking as "not so direct" in the chart at the end. : )

For New Year's Eve The Rendezvous, a local bar and restaurant, is transforming itself into a speakeasy. Period dress is optional, of course, but I cannot resist and have been working on a 1920's themed costume. In my search, I've come across some ideas and thought I'd share my findings.

Overview of 1920's style

Vintage and consignment shops are great places for hats, jewelry and hair pieces. Maybe you'll luck out and find a dress! Maybe.

Salvation Army and Goodwill. Large thrift stores are great for 1980's drop waist dresses for women and collegiate style clothing or three piece suits for men. Plus, you can get vintage style in modern sizes! Also, look for dresses without a defined waist but with fringe. I found a number of 1920's style dresses in our local thrift store in the "long-sleeve" section.

For men: 3 piece suits, collegiate, golfer, or gangster look, two tone shoes, bowler hats, and caps all echo the 1920's.

Twice Upon a Time - Leave lots of time for this store. Two levels of clothing plus gems in the individual booths.
Experienced Goods - Check out the Elliot Street store for hats and accessories and some clothing.

Putney
Swirl - For hats, jewelry and hair pieces especially.

Uncle Margaret's There are a couple of other vintage shops in Northampton but this is my favorite for service and selection. She'll likely be able to tell you if she has anything era appropriate in your size and/or if she has the right piece of jewelry.

Greenfield and Turners Falls

Salvation Army. I got my dress at the TFMA Sally's and saw a number of others plus a great pair of shoes.

One other idea, I have not checked out Michael's or other craft stores but I would guess you could find fringe and other items to bedazzle a simple black dress in 1920's style.

If only I knew the dances. Sigh!

My Upcycled Holiday Ornament Trio, A Tutorial

I adore the shape of these green bottles and began collecting enough to make some sort of holiday ornament. I wasn't sure what I was going to do at first. But, then, my Mom gave me a bag of glass ornaments that she bought but never used. I used the ribbon from the ornament box to attach the ornaments to each other and then the bottle.

Materials: 3 glass bottles (These are 750 ml/wine bottle size), 12 ten-inch round Christmas ornaments, organza or any ribbon that will fit through the ornament hangers and tie very tightly.

Thread the ribbon through the ornament hangers.

Gently pull the ribbon together and tie a knot.

Tie tightly to top of bottle and trim the ends. Alternatively, you could choose to leave the ribbon long and looping around the bottle.

Time: A few minutes per bottle to put together. The most time consuming part for me was removing the label residue. These bottles had labels that peeled completely off but left quite a lot of glue behind. Normally hot water and/or Goo Gone easily do the trick.

Cost: $0.00 and up! You can use empty bottles and ornaments and ribbon that you have on hand, or choose to purchase some or all of the components. Thrift shops are great places for ornaments and ribbon!

Other ideas: Frosted or clear glass bottles with assorted vintage ornaments, or green bottles with red ornaments. Lots of fun and creativity to be had!

This probably goes without saying, but use caution as the components are fragile.

I'm pleased to announce that I have recently joined the Etsy Project Embrace team, a group of Etsy members whose purpose is to create awareness and support for those diagnosed with cancer.

I have pondered for a while how I could use a percentage of the profits from my shop in a way that is meaningful to me. Last week, a customer told me that she would wear the pink blazer she bought from my shop for breast cancer awareness month (October). Her message motivated me to finally make a decision. I like that this small step from her lead to a positive change on my end.

Moth Ball Scent

This morning I read instructions for protecting clothing that encouraged the use of moth balls and discouraged the use of cedar for reasons including "cedar's distinctive smell can be absorbed by cloth items." Ya, you'd hate for you clothing to smell like, cedar.

Don't do this! Moth balls are toxic and the smell is very difficult to remove, not to mention repugnant. I wash or thoroughly steam items to prevent moths and use cedar or lavender sachets. So far, so good.

I've read and experienced that repeated washing does not help remove moth ball scent. Do wash thrift store clothing anyway, but if it is something you know was put away clean, air it out and try the method below.

To remove scent from clothing, seal the garment in a plastic bag with newspaper and baking soda for a couple of days. Repeat if necessary. I learned this little tid bit from Archivia via Etsy's Guide to Selling Vintage, Part One. (Was there a part two?)

After trying the above method to remove scent, leave your garment open to the air. I did this summer with some vintage pieces. I washed and air dried. Sealed with newspaper paper & baking soda, twice. Washed again and then hung them on a hangers on a clothing rack for a couple of months.

I hope this helps you revive vintage pieces you may have or restore those you find in thrift or consignment shops. Happy Shopping!

A Chat with Tiffany Hilton Pottery

As I sit here putting together this post about Tiffany Hilton Pottery, I am drinking tea from one of Tiffany's mugs, one of two I use every day, and having my breakfast from one of her beautiful bowls.

Tell us a bit about you?

I’m 37 and moved to Greenfield six years ago with my husband Tim. We bought our first home here because it was affordable and suitable for a studio. After saving money for three years – I purchased a used gas kiln and Tim built a fabulous kiln shed on the property. That was just last year! I am so excited to get to know the kiln better in the coming year – and to develop more glazes for my new work.

Aside from my studio life – I enjoy working part-time as a pottery teacher (http://www.mudpiepotters.org/class.html) and library director. Being alone in my studio a lot…I look forward to engaging with people in those settings – and sharing some of my other skills with the public. I am also going to volunteer for the Thrive Project (http://www.thethriveproject.org/) starting up in Turners Falls next month – by offering free help with resume and cover letter writing. That is something I’ve always been good at – and enjoy helping others with.

When I allow myself some down time – I attend to my yoga practice, walk and hike, play with my dogs, bake, peruse thrift stores and spend time with friends.

What is your best selling item?
Honestly, I’m not sure. I sell a lot of my hand-built serving trays and soap dishes – but probably mugs are the most popular item because they make such a great gift and it makes your morning more special to start the day with a favorite handmade cup in hand.

What is your favorite item to make?
BOWLS – I love making bowls. “We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. – Lao Tzu” When I throw bowls I focus on the interior “emptiness” more than the outside shell – making that space for the user to fill.

This time of year – you might see me on the side of the road picking out pumpkins from a farm stand. I can’t stand to pick just one – I find their form so beautiful – each one so different. Squat or tall, symmetrical or imperfect, and some more appealing to you than others. This is how I feel about bowls. I find their form to offer endless possibilities.

Can you tell us about ideas for new pieces?
I’m excited to start working on some larger forms (now that I have a larger kiln to fit them in) and will be making more serving pieces and hand-built centerpieces for the home. While I have filled the past few years with making custom dinnerware – I will be taking a break from those types of orders to develop a new body of work and tend to some of the ideas in my sketch book that I haven’t had time to work on.

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
Being self-employed has it’s challenges – but I LOVE making pots and feel so lucky that I’m able to spend time and energy on something that brings me lots of joy. I also love teaching and sharing my knowledge and passion for clay with others. And nothing makes me happier than to hear someone say that my mug is their absolute favorite – or to have a customer come back again and again for more pottery because they really love using them and find they have come to appreciate handmade items in a way they never imagined.

What is your favorite handmade item?

This is a tough question. I live with so many handmade items all around me. Each cup might be my favorite on a different day. I love two pieces I have by potter Mary Barringer*. They remind me that clay can be extraordinary and hold both the past and the future in one bowl. However, I think my favorite handmade item would be a broom from J.P. Welch ( https://justameretreefarm.com/brooms/ ) because I use it almost every day and it’s handle has become an extension of my hand - removing the dog hair and dust from each day. A ritual.

I'm in Love....with a Thermos

I bought this Stelton Erik Magnussen carafe/thermos at my local consignment last week. As soon as I got it home, I regretted bringing another new item into the house. I'm trying to reduce the amount of stuff we have, and was annoyed that I'd have to find a place to store it. Turns out, I'll be using it daily so it'll be on my desk or in my dish drainer. Problem solved.

Before I decided to keep it, I tried it out to see how hot it kept tea and how well its famed rocker stopper worked. Three hours after filling it, the tea was still steaming. Unbelievable! Plus, it's easy to carry around without spilling and it doesn't dribble when it pours. Welcome home little carafe, welcome home.

Reversible wool vest with gray lining. This is my favorite! No label that I can find.

It was my Dad's. He has given me a number of pieces and often asks "Did you sell any of my vests yet?"

Mustard yellow Mr. Roger's sweater. Perfect for fall and it looks terrific with a blue shirt.

Yes, This is a three piece suede suit! The lining has a fantastic duck motif. But wait, there is more. It has been tailored so that one leg is longer than the other and all the belt loops removed. I know this both because I saw the tag with instructions and because the belt loops and piece of pant leg fabric were in the pockets. I kid you not. Honestly, it's in fantastic shape. The owner was clearly meticulous.

Material is quite lightweight and "Scandia Suede." Is anyone familiar with this? Is it real suede or a synthetic made to feel like suede?

I'm excited to share with you this interview with Autumn of BiblioBags! I discovered her shop last week when was creating treasury and I'm smitten.

Tell us a bit about you?
I’m a 27 year old SAHM of one almost 3 year old toddler. My husband is in photography and advertising. I love movies, fashion, books and creating things . . . even when it blows up in my face! My brother teases me that I have a condition: I obsessively compulsively create things. It’s true!

I also have a degree in English and I’m a freelance screenwriter. I actually was a quarter finalist in the Nicholl Fellowship competition last year but I still have yet to sell one of my scripts. Since scripts are basically blueprints, it’s often frustrating to work so hard only to never see any of my stories finished. Crafts provide me with tangible projects I can see through to the end. They grant me a sense of closure that my scripts have yet to provide.

Your BiblioBags are fabulous pieces of functional art! Tell us a bit about them.
Thanks! BiblioBags are book bags . . . not bags to hold books, but bags made from books. Since the majority of books (or the cute ones, at least) are too narrow to hold much in them, I widen the spines of most of my purses. I use various supports and reinforcements to make the purses not just wide, but strong as well. These purses aren’t just a cute novelty . . . they are strong enough for every day use. Since I carry a book purse myself (made from an old Shakespeare textbook from college), functionality is important to me. I don’t want to sell something that’s useless.

Once I’ve widened the book, I cut out the pages (I use the pages for making other crafts and for eco-friendly packing supplies—I recycle what’s left over). Then I cut out all the fabric and add interfacing and Wonder Under for strength. I also treat the fabric to be stain and water resistant. I construct the lining for the book and add pockets for the inside. Finally, add premade handles and a button and ribbon loop for a closure. It takes several hours of work to make one purse . . . hence the lofty prices!

Could someone send you a book for a custom order?
Absolutely! I would, however, like to see pictures of it first. I’ve made purses out of some pretty pitiful books, but I would like to see what state it’s in before I commit to something. I like to work things out on a case-by-case basis . . . guess that’s why they call them custom orders!

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
I like feeling part of a community. I never knew there were so many weirdos out there like me! Every day I meet someone new. I love to share my creations and be inspired and surprised by others’ work.

Looking at each bag, I can see how much thought went into picking out the coordinating pieces. Could you tell us a bit about your process?
It always starts with the book. I usually go by the appearance rather than the title itself . . . I do judge books by their cover! (Sorry, couldn’t help myself) While I get the most excited about my kitschy vintage books (like my “Retro Electric Book Clutch” and “60s Style Secretary Book Purse”), I try to have just as many classic books (“Pride and Prejudice”) on hand as well. While I’ve made many purses with new books I’m now committed to only buying used. They don’t make books like the used to! Honestly, vintage books are stronger and make better purses. Not to mention, it’s better for the environment to go used. It makes me happy to make something beautiful out of something no one wanted. My favorite haunts are used bookstores and library sales. I’ve found my favorite books in my library’s basement!

Next, I pick out the fabric. My number one rule on picking out a coordinating fabric is to avoid being literal at all costs. Sure, it’s tempting to pick out a bat fabric when you’re making a “Dracula” purse . . . but who wants to carry bats around? I picked out a cream and black damask instead. On it’s own, a damask is very elegant. When paired with a “Dracula” book, however, suddenly it looks sinister. It’s all about the mood. I also try to balance the fabric and cover . . . sometimes a cover is so busy I have to pick a very muted fabric so they don’t compete.

As far as handles go, there are less options. But I do try to at least pick a pair of handles that goes along with the theme or mood I’m trying to portray. Bamboo pairs great with exotic or classic purses while plastic handles echo a retro feel.

Sometimes I feel I would like one more element in the mix. I’ve molded buttons out of polymer clay to match the theme of the purse. For example, I made a nautilus for my “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” purse. I love doing that . . . it’s like the exclamation point on the end of a sentence. It just gives it that extra “oomph.”

Your cards are adorable. How did you get started making them?
I’ve been scrapbooking for over a decade and it was sort of a natural evolution of that. I started making custom cards for friends with themes featuring anything from “Napoleon Dynamite” to jumping orangutans (the orangutan really jumped!). One day I was looking at a photography blog and was inspired by a close up of a frosted cupcake. Something about the curvature of the frosting inspired me to imitate the same shapes with paper. After plenty of mistakes, I finally had a paper cupcake. The swirls of soft serve ice cream and whipped cream are similar to cupcake frosting, so that was a natural progression to make ice cream cone and milkshake cards.

What is your favorite handmade item?
That’s a hard one! Other than purses and cards, I gravitate to things I know I couldn’t pull off by myself: jewelry, couture dresses and fine art. Right now, I’m obsessed with felt food. As a child, I loved to play “kitchen” with plastic play food. You know, the tomatoes halves held together by velcro? Felt food satisfies that kid in me that remembers food is more than taste: it’s also shapes, color and texture. I’m in love with BeckyM’s shop. She has an amazing eye. You instantly recognize what cuisine she’s created but she has away of adding a whimsical twist to remind you it’s art.

Fun with Fruit and Flowers

There is so much beauty surrounding us right now. I was inspired to photograph my vintage vases with flowers from my garden and take a few other photos with the gorgeous apricots and plums we got at Apex Orchards.

Here is a sampling of what's coming up at Crabapple Vintage:

O.k., o.k. this has nothing to do with fruit and flowers, but it is pretty cool. Made by Thermos, early to mid 20th century.

This fantastic Hall teapot (Windshield style) is missing it's lid, but I think it has a new life as a vase.

This collection was also built in stages. I thought it would be fun to fill this jar with coordinating kitchen items and have found these Tupperware pieces over time. I am so pleased with how it turned out and will list it very soon!

Playing Dress Up

Last weekend, I attended my sister in-law's beautiful wedding. It was held on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The food was fantastic (really!) and the music fun. I promised some pics of my vintage ensemble. So, here they are.

Jen's Closet knocked it out of the park with these earrings. The photo doesn't do them justice. They sparkle like crazy. At my local jeweler, I bought little silicone pads to slip over the clips. They made a big difference in comfort.

I searched for more hours and tried on more dresses than I care to think about and ended up with this fantastic vintage piece.

Oh so fun to wear, but it presented a few challenges. With its many pleats and fragile chiffon, it allowed only minimal and very careful cleaning. It required a crinoline, which a friend loaned to me to cut and resize, amazingly generous. I realize from looking at the pics that I never even bothered to make sure the crinoline was even along the bottom - oops! The top is completely sheer so once the appropriate convertible undergarment was obtained, I then had to cover it in matching material. I figured you'd want to see my mad sewing skills at work and at that at least one of you - you know who you are - would appreciate the focus on the girls.

Most vintage outfits that I have worn are not this challenging to pull together. In fact, they aren't challenging at all. This one was an exception with its sheer top and being different enough from my usual style that I had to buy nearly all of the accessories, including these 4 inch heels - enormously high for me and I love them even if one toe still aches a little bit.

Now that I have all of these goodies, what do I do with them? Keep them to wear again? Consign? Sell on Etsy? Decisions. Decisions.

Life is a Bowl of Cherries

Cherry crisp and three little jars of jam.

Bought 2 quarts of these beautiful cherries last week and promptly processed them into crisp and jam. They are "semi-sweet" which are still super sour. I love their dark, rich color, but for taste I like the sour cherries (Montmorency) best. Perhaps next year we'll get around to picking enough to do a batch of jam worthy of pulling out the canner. After all, I have this snazzy new cherry pitter.

Cherries = $10. Pitter = $8. Pectin = $4.50. Egads! I felt like a dumbass by the time I got it all home. Ah, well, the pitter will, hopefully last or now that I know what it looks like I'll find a vintage one that will, and the pectin is enough for many more batches of jam.

Since moving to an area with an abundance of local fruit, veggies, cheese, eggs, grain (really!), etc., etc., we've become focused on eating locally grown and produced food as much as possible - a decision with a plethora of benefits including exceptional flavor - and eating fresh, local fruit seasonally. It makes the fruit a real treat, and me a little crazed about preserving it. We eat as much as we want fresh and then freeze and/or can the rest for use the remainder of the year.

Next up are blueberries and peaches!

A Chat with akaCINDERS!

I'm so pleased to share this interview with Cinders from akaCinders on Etsy. One thing I particularly like about Cinder's shops is that they have a consistent style but appeal to a variety of individual tastes!. Have a look for yourselves, and if you like an item simply click on it to view it in her shop.

Tell us a bit about you?
For years I designed lighting fixtures and table lamps. My specialty was Tiffany style lamps and painted finish design. As an artist I got tired of the corporate world and jumped out when I had a chance. My daughter Poppy from poppyswickedgarden.etsy.com was making a good living selling on Etsy so I thought I'd give it a try.

I learned to love crafting from my mom, we dabbled in every form of it. I studied Industrial Design and Jewelry in school, so Jewelry it was. Selling on Etsy involves more than just crafting, there's also copy writing, photography and marketing. It took a while to get the hang of it, and I'm still learning. But I love my online life.

What is ecofelt and how is it to work with?
Eco felt is made from recycling plastic bottles, instead of piling [them] up in landfill. The process of making the felt, and my flowers, leaves trace toxins in the air, but so does our breathing. We clean toxins by planting trees and making sure the Rainforests that provide 40% of our oxygen aren't destroyed.

I wanted to do something original for my shop. Because I've worked with plastics, I knew the ecofelt felt could be “melted”. Ecofelt has a texture that snags easily. When I heat it, I can shape it and the texture tightens up nicely. It is a process that I developed myself.

What's new at akaCINDERS?
I challenge myself with things I think I can't make. I'm always looking at flowers, trying to think of ways to make them with ecofelt. I recently started making impressed polymer clay centers and I just bought a new batch of vintage beads to work with.

What is your favorite item to create?
I love flowers, and making them wearable is so exciting. They are not an exact replica, but more of an impression of the flower. I love the Poppies but my favorite are the Black Eyed Susans.

How would you describe your other shops?
I share PoppySprouts with my Daughter, Poppy. Many of the designs are more playful versions of her adult clothing. We use a lot of vintage character fabrics in our kids shop and in our PoppysGardenGate shop, where we make Aprons* and Home Accessories. Those shops are a lot of fun.

Cinderellascache has seen many faces. It was a shop for Genre Jewelry and now I am adding my own artwork. I will be keeping some vintage genre, adding more of my designs and using new materials. Look for many changes to come.

What is your favorite handmade item?
I love Candles and Soaps. I love surrounding my self with great relaxing fragrances. It's the one key thing missing from my flowers. Maybe I should add a little sachet with them.

Strawberries!

Strawberry season seemed early and we were busy, and almost missed it. I was so excited to find an open place that I forgot to ask about their pesticide use.

For a long time, I bought only organic. Six years ago, after moving to Western MA, I learned the importance of buying local first to support our farms and help preserve agricultural land. Buying locally allows us to experience food that is grown for flavor and variety, and that is truly fresh, tasty and nutritious.

So, I don't know if this farm is organic (unlikely with fruit) or if they practice IPM (integrated pest management) or if they spray loads of toxic chemicals on their fruit (also unlikely given the weeds I saw and because they don't have to transport it). But I do know that it is family run and part of the state's Agricultural Preservation Restriction program, protecting it as farmland for generations to come.

A Chat with Modish Vintage

This week's interview is with the fabulous Modish Vintage. Her shop and blog caught my attention when I first started shopping on Etsy because of her great sense of style and and beautiful photographs. Just browsing through her shop has me inspired to go vintage hunting!

I have sprinkled a few of my favorite items from her shop throughout. Simply click on the item to view the listing. I'll let her do the talking now....

When did you start collecting vintage?
I think my love for the unusual, modern, sometimes quirky stuff started since I can remember and had become more evident when I started to furnish my first apartment back in the college days. I would go to Goodwill and Salvation Army and just buy old home décor stuff that catches my fancy. I really didn’t have any knowledge of the antique or vintage then, I just picked the things that I thought would compliment my living space and of course things that made me happy. I didn’t go heavy with collecting or buying vintage since about six months before I started my Etsy shop.

How would you describe your treasure hunting style?
If I have the time I will visit my local thrift shop every other day. The more you frequent, the more chances you will get the first dibs of the treasures. Lately though, I have been going less to thrift stores and instead visiting estate auction places in my area. I get much better selections all in one place.

You've had great success at auctions and some interesting experiences, too. Do you have any stories you'd like to share?
I have many stories in thrifting…funny ones and not so funny ones. You’d have to read my blog, where I mostly share my thrifting adventures.

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
First and foremost is that I get to stay home with my kids while making some living on the side. Secondly, I love shopping for vintage items, now I can go shopping without feeling guilty (most of the times). Lastly, being able to do my work at my own time and being able to wear my pajamas all day long if I want to. It’s the first time I can honestly say “I love my job!”.

What do you think has been the biggest factor in your success?
I think having a great photo of the product really helped me in my first year, which made my items got mentioned on a few notable blogs as well. Finding wonderful, quality, unique items is what most people look for. Wonderful customer service is also another big factor.

What is your most cherished find?
My most cherished find that I can’t let go right now are my Hummel collections. I started collecting them when I was pregnant with my twins. I have a few and don’t collect them now. I have them prominently displayed in my cabinet in my living room; they bring such warm and cheer to the space.

Interview with GlazedOver

I'm so pleased to share this interview with Jill of glazedOver. Her well-made pieces range from bowls, to necklaces (my new favorite!), to mugs of different sizes (espresso to ginormous), to garden stakes, coasters, buttons, and more.

What inspires your creations and the rich colors of your glazes?
The muse. I have little say in what comes off the wheel. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have my own aesthetic and I always aim for what makes my eyes happy. I gravitate toward clean lines, simple profiles and balanced designs. As for my glazes, I like to experiment but I stay within the confines of the colors that I find distinctive. I want my work to look dramatically different from what you can buy at Target. It has to say and feel “handmade, one of a kind" or it's not worth the effort. I think of the pottery I make as similar to the people I prefer – a little eccentric and very colorful, but always stable and decent.

What's new at GlazedOver?
Ooh, ooh! Pick me, pick ME!!

Ahem.

New at glazedOver are my brand spanking new pendant necklaces . They are so delicious and so quirky-cool. I’ve been wearing them all over the place and no matter where I go people are staring and commenting. It’s very exciting. I never imagined that I’d be making necklaces. It all started with a convo from a buyer who said she really liked my buttons but she didn’t have a use for them. She suggested that I make pendants and asked me to let her know when I have some for sale (and now that I’m thinking about it, I realize I forgot to tell her. Wait here, I’m going to go convo her…).

What is your favorite item to create and why?
It depends on the day. Some are wheel days, and others are slab days. I’m pretty obedient to where to muse tells me to go and at the end of the day, I'm always content.

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
I love that I get to be a mudder. It’s hard to put it into words, but clay feeds my need. Each time I step foot into the pottery studio, I actively feel my pulse relax and my mind clear. Clay helps me stay whole.

What is your favorite piece of pottery, made by you or somebody else?
I am definitely a pottery person. I love my own work, but there are so many other potters whose work makes my heart go pitter patter. If I had to choose one potter, I'd say it would be Ady Shapira of Wapa on Etsy. She has pretty phenomenal control over porcelain. Her work is paper thin and her pieces are mind-boggling masterful.

How to Make an Etsy Treasury East

1. Make a Poster Sketch: http://www.etsy.com/poster_sketch.php
Poster sketch is an Etsy tool that allows you to organize your items and see what your treasury will look like. It saves you work automatically. Bookmark the tool so that it is easy to access.

To create the sketch, find an item you like. Copy the listing id number (located in the "stats" section toward the bottom of the right hand side of the page). Click "edit" below the square you wish to fill. Paste the listing ID. Click "O.k." Do this 16 times! You can drag and drop items to rearrange your treasury.

2. Open Treasury East: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/
Click on "+New Treausry" on the top right of the page.

3. Choose a Title and, if desired, a Treasury Description.

4. Click "Save this List" at the bottom of the page. If you choose, you may enter your items, arrange them and then save.

5. Copy your items from your poster sketch to your treasury.
Click "edit" below the item in the Poster Sketch then copy and paste the listing ID into Treasury East. No need to hit enter. Drag and drop items to rearrange them within your treasury. If your treasury is featured on Etsy's Front Page the first three rows will appear and the items in the last row are alternates.

6. How to find your treasury? At the top of the main Treasury East page is a link called "Your Treasuries." Click this to see the treasures that you have created. They do not expire.

7. To edit your treasury: Go to your list of treasuries. Click the treasury to be edited. Then click the "edit my treasury" link at the top, right of the page.

8. To delete your treasury: Follow the same steps as above. On the bottom of the right column is a heading called "Curator Tools" and beneath that it reads "Delete this treasury."

It is a good idea to let shops know that they have been featured. I usually send a generic Convo with a link to the treasury. Sometimes, I alert people in Twitter. Also, by clicking on each item after the treasury has been created, you make it possible for Craftopolis to pick it up. Craftopolis allows shops to search for treasuries in which they are featured.

We have some big birthdays coming up this year and I'm hosting a family gathering at the end of May - Yikes! Yesterday I made sample batches of the vegan cupcakes I had planned to serve. I shared with friends, which was super fun, and was realized that I'm going to make two totally different recipes for the party!

First things first - the cupcakes:

Vanilla with vanilla buttercream frosting & sprinkles and

chocolate coconut with coffee frosting topped with toasted coconut and a chocolate covered espresso bean.

Both were tasty. I think the chocolate was the favorite.

Usually, I love vegan baking : clean up is a breeze, you don't have to be so fussy with measurements, and it lends itself really well to whole grain flours and liquid sweeteners. But, this was disappointing. Recipes used white flour, white sugar, powdered sugar, processed vegan buttery spread and shortening. The shortening covered everything with a greasiness that was tough to clean and I'm fairly certain my kitchen is still covered in a micro fine layer of powdered sugar. I found myself wondering why I had decided to serve food that I generally choose not to eat? The answer is easy - I got caught up in a fluffy frosted fantasy of cupcake joy.

It was worth the effort because I realized two things: 1. Even though they were tasty, my sister wont like the vegan version of her favorite vanilla vanilla cake. I'm going to go traditional and make it with real butter cream frosting. 2. I want my vegan, whole wheat pastry flour, maple sweetened, delicious chocolate cake that I make only for special occasions. The frosting is amazing. It starts as pudding that is blended into a creamy, spreadable frosting - no powdered sugar or shortening to be found. And, soooooooooo good!

Now, I still have to figure out the raspberry pie for my Dad!

An Interview with VintageEye!

Introducing Kathleen of VintageEye, Vintage Eye Fashion and satellitedaisy (which has loads of cute vintage buttons, sewing & crafting supplies, and original art, by the way). She 's corralled some great vintage pieces and has them all arranged for you in her shops. See if you can find a must have!

A bit about you?
I was born a back in the day when Jackie Kennedy & Grace Kelly set the standards of style, the space race was really heating up & cool was king! My actual life turned out nothing like any of that so I have made a career out of trying to bring it all back! But, I digress…

How would you describe the style of your shops?
I started out selling my art on satellitedaisy and quickly figured out that nobody wanted it. So I moved on to selling vintage which people did want to buy. I spun off Vintage Eye to separate the art from the vintage then opened Vintage Eye Fashion to corral the clothing. I think each one has a distinct style. Satellitedaisy has an outsider artsy rustic feel. Vintage Eye Fashion is more fun with a quirky sophistication and with Vintage Eye, I go for a retro meets modern, then they break up and retro dates kitsch & modern has a passionate romp with mid century! Of course, this is probably all my head & I can only hope any of it translates to my actual shops!

What, if anything, do you collect?
My favorite stuff to collect is anything 1970s. I adore orange slag glass vases, retro luggage, clothing from the 1960s & 1970s & kitsch. Travel kitsch, home décor kitsch, Polytoreadortikilicious kitsch? Oh yes, please! Oh and lamps! I love retro lamps- the uglier they are the better. Big, gaudy and orange with funky avocado green and some awful gaudy accent hanging out the top! Heaven!

Describe your treasure hunting or collecting style?
I paw through thrift stores, yard sales, church sales, auctions and garbage cans to find all manner of items to sell. My husband is the most wonderful wingman. He can spot a deal a mile away. He has a great eye for luggage & house wares. He once found a cookie jar at a sale for $2.00. It was worth $150!! Oh, I love that man!

What is your favorite "they don't make 'em like this anymore" item?
My favorite item ever that I wish they still made is well, to be truthful, I miss dials. On televisions, stoves, microwaves, radios…you remember, before buttons, you could turn a dial to make things go. It was so simple & you didn’t need an advanced degree to watch TV! Also, I want my phone to just be a phone. I don’t want it to take pictures, wake me up in the morning, surf the net, or tell me how to get to K mart, I just want it to make phone calls, which it refuses to do half the time…progress? I think not!

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
What I enjoy about the vintage trade is the thrill of the hunt! You never know when you will come across a treasure trove of awesome goodies. I have found the most wonderful items in the unlikeliest of places…I love surprises! Then getting the perfect item together with the perfect customer is like matchmaking. ..So gratifying! But more than that is the most wonderful group of sellers I have met on Etsy & Twitter. Everyone is so generous with their time, knowledge & talents, whether someone has a question about an item or a serious problem in their life, this amazing community of people is always ready to help. I never expected to find that and really feel my life is better for it!

Lou's Upcycles: Using Art for Awareness

I'm so excited to share this interview with Lou Leelyn of Lou's Upcycles. I could chat about the cool way we met and how pleased I am that she and her family moved to Western MA, but I say we skip to the good stuff:

Why did you start Lou's Upcycles?
Why? After composting, recycling, reusing, repurposing, and reducing waste and otherwise eco-driving myself and my family batty, there was still these plastic bags and packaging that had no where else to go but the trash can. We reuse them but the eventual fate is to consider them garbage. Lou's Upcycles was launched to not only find a functional use for said bags, but to also use my art to create awareness.

How do you turn potato chip bags into fabric?
Each un-recyclable bag is washed, dried, and exposed to heat and pressure. One may use an iron or a steam press. Most need to be layered, some are thick enough to stand up to heat on their own. The front and the back of the bag are fused together create one piece of fabric. This process was repeated over 10, 000 times last year, as I estimate that is how many bags I have kept out of the landfills. From there, the plastic fabric can be cut, glued, sewn, collaged, folded, quilted and just about anything else you can think of. This process envelops upcycling which is turning something that would be trash into something that is functional.

You teach kids how to make bags. How do they respond?
When I travel to schools, clubs, and group settings for my workshops, I am generally greeted with a curious and cautious eye. The room is generally filled with plastic trash, I am not tidy on purpose to drive home just how many bags surround us in the world. As soon as I display an upcycled creation, the oohs and ahhs begin. Their eyes pop open and suddenly, they are proactive and engaged. When you show a child that something in their world that seems to have only one function actually has more than one, it is a fascinating transformation to watch. So often, a child or adult has not thought twice about that package, the thoughts go right to the product that is inside whether it be food, mail, dry cleaning, a gift. To see them focus on what comes after the product has been exciting.

What do you enjoy most about this venture?
I have been blessed on this journey. It is all enjoyable. I have not only switched how others see the things we throw away but have changed many more of my consumption habits as a result. Constantly finding new and creative ways to use things has been life changing. I also get a kick out of being people's recycling confessional. When I travel to shows and festivals, people find it necessary to confess to me their current habits. "My husband threw away the recyclables, I swear it wasn't me!" or "I try to recycle but my kids won't help!" I think it's funny that people perceive me as judging them, as if I can monitor their habits at home somehow. Trust me, I am not perfect at this. No one is. I still love my Reece's Peanut Butter cups all nestled in their plastic wrapper and I still can't solve the problem of purchasing some items without a plastic package but like I say, "Do what you can, when you can, however you can, with whomever you can."

Since today is Earth Day is there anything you would like to say on that topic?
Happy Earth Day!
It saddens me to some extent that we have to designate a day in which to think upon the topics of environmentalism. Those who celebrate, I think, are the people who are thinking about it on the 21st, and the 23rd as well. That's why I have a commitment to speaking with people all year. I am blessed to live in a community that listens. Now go plant a tree!

What handmade item do you most cherish (borrowed this ? from Etsy)
My most cherished handmade item was not made by me. It is an upcycled pillow created by my daughter who has gotten the upcycling fever. She used old fabrics and sewed it on the machine herself. She is my muse and my purpose and reminds me daily that my work will indeed have an impact on her future.

Thanks for thinking twice about the items you purchase, the items you reuse and the items you throw away. In order to do right by the environment we live in is just to make little choices every day. You don't need to be perfect, you just need to be aware. Enjoy yourself!

Lasagna Gardening

Sheet Mulching or Lasagna Gardening.

Why do it?

suppresses weeds
improves the soil
eliminates need to dig or till
makes planting and maintenance easier
eventually gives you healthy raised beds

How to do it?
Instead of digging up a plot of grass or tilling your garden every year, continue to add compost and mulch leaving the soil undisturbed. When you till or or otherwise disturb the soil you often expose weed seeds to sunlight and they germinate. The soil microbes also get disturbed which effects the health of your soil and the vigor of your plants.

We've just started doing this in the past couple of years. What I have noticed is how much easier gardening has become. It's also pretty amazing to see the cardboard breakdown and disappear. From a garden plot started a few years ago, all that's left of the moving boxes we used as a weed barrier is packing tape.

The basics:

Water new garden plot.
Put down a layer of compost.
Put down a weed barrier, i.e., cardboard or 4 layers of newspaper. Water again.
Add more compost. Water.
Top with straw or mulch.
Water again.

You may want to find a more detailed resource but this is the general idea. I used Perennial Vegetables by Eric Toensmeier to get started.

What I won't do for you? In the middle of typing this post, I went out and made a bed for my zinnias. Here are some photos to illustrate what I did. Note, if this were for a veggie garden I would have put compost, then newspaper, then more compost (and more than what you saw in the photo), then straw.

Thursday - Fun Finds

For a few weeks, I've been featuring wonderful shops that I discover during the week. Starting next Thursday, I'm going to post what I hope will become a series of interviews with shop owners. I'm super excited about the first one that I have planned.: ) For this week, a new discovery:

While I was at the hairdressers (does anyone still use that term?) today, the stylist told me about friend of hers who has an Etsy shop called Oui BAGS. I'm so glad I checked it out. She uses a variety of fabrics so there is sure to be something to please. The bags are a nice size and have a closure and pockets - sweet! I'm thinking Mother's Day gift! Have a look:

Tea Steeping

When I make a cup of tea, and set it aside to steep - this is how I roll:

You'll have to envision this on a desk with a computer....

First, I get my favorite mug, which today is filled with Yogi Peach Detox tea. It sits upon a cute felt coaster.

Next comes the upcycled tea cup cozy. I made this for the shop but liked it so much that I kept it. I do have two for sale. If you like the idea, send me a convo with your color preferences.

According to Lesha's Workshop, this tea should steep for 10 minutes. Pop the cozy over the cup and it'll stay hot while it steeps.

The Mazer Cup Int'l Results Are In!

What is the Mazer Cup? It's an annual international mead competition held in Boulder Colorado. But wait, what's mead? It's fermented honey, sometimes called honey wine but not to be mixed up with white wine with honey added. At its most simple, it is made from honey, water, and yeast. Due to different varieties of honey and yeast, there are quite a range of flavors and styles with just those three ingredients.

My husband and his two pals run Green River Ambrosia making delicious meads. They entered their very special Bourbon Barrel Cyzer into this year's Mazer Cup competition. I feel another question coming on, cyser or cyzer is mead made with honey, apple cider and yeast. They had the bourbon bottles shipped here especially for the batch and after the mead fermented it was aged in the barrels. It's remarkably tasty. Oh, and it won a Silver Medal. YAY!

If you've tried mead in the past and didn't care for it, perhaps because it was too thick or just tasted "off", now is the time to seek it out and try it again as it is experiencing a revival. Lazy Sunday

Today was a perfect lazy Sunday. Lots of mystery novel reading, toast, coffee, and a mellow hike in the woods. The sun came out for a bit (after I took the photos!) but for the most part it was a quiet, gray day.

Brown Rice, Spinach, & Feta Salad

Monday night we had dinner with old friends. So fun. This salad was a big hit. The taste is surprisingly rich and satisfying. It is my favorite type of dish: tasty, healthy, easy, and a meal in itself. It's an ideal quick lunch or dinner for the summer months. Nearly any green, even asparagus or broccoli, would taste great. Serve it in a nice big bowl or dished onto your favorite plate.

Brown Rice, Spinach, & Feta Salad

4 cups cooked brown rice
1 bunch spinach (approx. 1/2 pound)
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (I use local goat or sheep feta.)
10 kalamata olives, pitted and chopped
1/3 cup toasted pine nuts
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 TBSP balsamic vinegar
1/2 tsp sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Pinch of cayenne

Reheat brown rice.

Toast pine nuts in dry pan on medium heat until they start to brown.

Put red onion, feta, and olives in your serving bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk vinegar, oil, salt, pepper and cayenne. Pour over onions, feta and olives. Add pine nuts when toasted.

Chop spinach. Put on top of warming rice to gently wilt - or leave fresh.

Add rice and spinach to other ingredients and mix very well. ENJOY!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

I was just overwhelmed by a wave of nostalgia pondering one of my favorite Irish pubs. A few of us used to hang out on weeknights after work, often being some of the only customers other than a handful of regulars. On St. Patrick's Day it would transform from a dark, mellow, quiet pub to a rowdy hot spot. It was wild.

Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail

It's nearly time for the annual Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail. This is a weekend where area potters open their studios for us to tromp through, learn, have a snack, and buy their amazing work. The area is home to some truly talented and well-known artisans.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from two women who do beautiful work. They shapes they create and glazes they use appeal to me as art and as functional pottery.

I am drinking tea from this, my favorite mug, as I type.

This casserole dish makes the tastiest roasted root vegetables! I bought it at our local farmers' market one sunny, summer morning. It was love at first sight.

From Lucy Fagella, Lucia Pottery:

I bought this at an art show wile we were still house hunting in the area. I overcame my usual shyness to ask Lucy her thoughts on our prospective town. Her enthusiasm was catching.

This bowl is atypical of Lucy's work. I grabbed it from the second's table at an open studio because it reminded me of the dinners I had with my husband's family when we were dating. They would set the table with a table cloth from his stepmom's vintage collection, a pitcher of water, and fill serving bowls like this one with the various culinary delights of the evening. We would all play a part in getting it set up. If it sounds formal, it wasn't. It was casual and warm.

The Easiest, Most Delicious Veggie Soup

I make this soup a number of times in a week. As a matter of fact, I'll be having it tonight for dinner since I've already exhausted popcorn as an option. ; ) It is so tasty, easy and healthy that I want to share. Measurements are approximate and substitutions are encouraged!

I first had a version of this soup from our friends at Tofu A Go-Go. They have since headed to Provincetown, MA and you can taste Star's delicious creations at Bradford Natural Market.

Veggie Noodle Soup

2 cups water
Clove of garlic, minced
Udon, soba or rice noodles
Small sweet potato, peeled and diced (optional, but good)
1/4 Onion, sliced (optional)
1 small Carrot, chopped
Mix of chopped veggies equaling approximately 1 cup: cabbage, celeriac, celery, daikon radish, burdock root, and/or white turnip
Greens chopped small, approx. 1 cup: napa cabbage, spinach, broccoli, kale, OR bok choi
Bragg's Liquid Aminos* for flavor and saltiness.
Hot Sauce (optional)

Directions:

1. Bring water to a boil.

2. While water is coming to a boil, mince garlic and set aside in soup bowl.

3. Add sweet potato, noodles and dash Braggs to boiling liquid. Cook 10 mins.

4. Add onion, carrots, celeriac (if using), dash Braggs and hot sauce (if using). Simmer approx. 3-4 minutes

5. Add other veggies, greens and dash Braggs. Simmer approx. 1-2 minutes.

6. Taste and add more Bragg's if needed.

7. Add garlic. Stir and serve.

Everything should still be brightly colored when served. Use the amount of veggies you want to eat and in a reasonable ratio to the noodles and water. I just chop a bunch of stuff and add it in. Usually it's too much soup for one big bowl and I have a serving and 1/2. Best eaten while watching Millionaire or That 70's Show.

*Bragg's makes it taste a bit like ramen. If you don't have Bragg's or don't like it, use miso and/or broth.

1946 Singer Sewing Machine

I saw this today in one of my favorite haunts. It was expensive for the store. I went back and forth about whether or not I should buy it, knowing it needs tuning. Alas, the peer pressure in my head (I have lots of friends who sew and would love this machine.) pushed me to haul it to the counter.

It is said to have a great motor, but there is a problem with.....what did I do with the tag???.....tension, I believe. Hopefully, I'll find her a home where she can be used and admired.

I love the decorative metal plates, but I think my favorite part is the light or possibly the fabulous wheel for raising and lowering the needle.

A Blast from the Past

Rummaging through a box of stuff from my youth, I came across this:
MTV Top 20 Video Countdown, First Annual, 1984

Why I wrote this down and kept it, who knows? "Missing You" by John Waite was a favorite so perhaps that is why. Or, maybe just because it was the first. Or because I'm a huge dork. I recall sitting with my best friend and her brothers and sisters on their couch watching MTV when it was first introduced, curious about this hot new thing.
